Yulin – At SUNTIME, we believe that true craftsmanship grows through practice, patience, and shared knowledge. To encourage continuous skill development and foster a spirit of mutual learning among our team members, we recently held our annual Weaving Skills Competition at our main workshop.

The event brought together dozens of senior artisans from surrounding mountain villages — many of whom are left-behind elders now enjoying dignified employment through our factory. Participants competed in categories such as bamboo weaving, grass plaiting, and decorative knotting, demonstrating remarkable precision, creativity, and speed. Beyond the competition itself, the day was marked by warm exchanges of techniques, encouragement, and pride in each other’s work.

More Than a Contest: A Commitment to Growth and Dignity

At SUNTIME, our mission extends far beyond producing high-quality handwoven products. We are dedicated to creating sustainable, flexible employment opportunities for rural seniors who might otherwise face isolation and financial hardship. Through regular training sessions and events like this competition, we empower our artisans to continuously improve their skills, increase their income, and take pride in their work.

“This competition is not about winning or losing — it’s about growing together,” said Judy Zhu, founder and manager of SUNTIME. “When our weavers learn from one another, they gain confidence and a sense of belonging. That is just as important as the products they make.”

Building a Supportive Artisan Community

Throughout the competition, participants were seen sharing tips on pattern design, discussing ways to reduce hand fatigue, and cheering for fellow weavers. The event concluded with an award ceremony, where winners received cash prizes, certificates, and weaving toolkits. Yet, as many participants noted, the greatest reward was the opportunity to connect, learn, and celebrate their shared craft.

Since its founding in 2001, SUNTIME has provided stable income to over 55 elderly residents across nearby villages. Our artisans work in a supportive environment that includes flexible hours, meals, and access to social activities — all designed to honor their skills and enhance their quality of life.

Looking Ahead

Encouraged by the success of this year’s competition, we plan to make the event a seasonal tradition, and eventually invite weavers from neighboring villages to join. Our long-term vision is to build a regional skills exchange network that preserves traditional weaving techniques while creating lasting economic opportunities for rural seniors.
